Breaking Bad Habits for TMJ Relief

Did you know there are various bad habits that can actually make your temporomandibular joint disorder and associated symptoms worse? These bad habits include:

Biting Finger Nails

Did you know that biting your fingernails actually required your jaw to work in a way it isn’t designed to? This unnatural jaw movement can actually worsen TMD/TMJ symptoms, leading to additional symptoms. We recommend investing in nail-biting polish and regularly tending to your fingernails.

Clenching/Grinding Teeth

Do you often find yourself clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth? This can also make TMD symptoms much worse, we recommend reducing stress along with caffeine intake. You can also train yourself to place your tongue between your teeth, making sure your teeth are not touching. Custom mouthguards can also be a very effective treatment option, allowing you to protect your smile while reducing uncomfortable symptoms.

Using Teeth As Tools

Did you know your teeth aren’t designed to replace scissors or hands? You should never use your teeth to hold things, open things or even cut things outside of food. Find yourself constantly using your teeth as tools? We recommend investing in some traveling tools with a carrying case.
